What is Soroptimist?
Founded in 1921 in Oakland, California, Soroptimist is an international organization for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. The name “Soroptimist” comes from the latin and means “best for women,” and that’s what the organization strives to achieve. Soroptimists are women of all ages, cultures and ethnic groups. They are women from all walks of life. The common thread that connects all Soroptimists is their desire to make a difference for women. Since its inception in 1921, membership has grown to nearly 100,000 women in about 120 countries and territories who contribute their time and financial support to community–based and international projects that benefit women and girls. Soroptimists are women at their best, working to help other women to be their best.
